Los Angeles, CA - The Korean American Coalition of Los Angeles (KAC) condemns President Donald Trump’s racially insensitive remarks, specifically towards a Korean American intelligence analyst last fall. The intelligence analyst, an expert in hostage policy, was briefing President Trump on “the impending release of a family long held in Pakistan” when President Trump asked her where she was from. Upon answering that she was from New York City, President Trump reportedly pressed her on where “your people” were from. When the analyst responded that her parents were Korean, President Trump then referred to the analyst as the “pretty Korean lady,” while asking an adviser why she was not involved in negotiations with North Korea.

“On the eve of the president’s completion of his first year in office, it’s been disappointing to consider the number of unfortunate and misguided comments and policy decisions made by the president. Race and gender should never be reasons to question a professional contributing to the welfare of our country,” said Joon Bang, KAC executive director.

KAC finds such reductionary language highly problematic. Korean Americans, along with many other minority groups, are subjected to exclusionary language and flawed assumptions, despite being fellow members of our community and our nation. On the heels of Korean American Day, we are reminded that despite the Korean American community’s 115 year history in the United States, discrimination and racism persist. KAC stands against racism and discrimination in all its forms, and condemns President Trump’s propagation of such problematic speech.
