115 years ago, on January 13, 102 Korean men, women, and children made history as the first Korean immigrants to the United States. Since this first wave of immigration, Korean Americans have become one of the fastest growing groups of Asian Americans in the US and have become an integral part of this country.
Korean Americans are a part of the American experience in many ways, with roots in immigration, a pursuit of the American dream, a history of fighting for their rights, investment into the communities they live in, sacrifice in our wars, and countless other contributions to this country. Days like Korean American Day, which celebrate our country's diversity, are even more meaningful now, in a time when the president of the US is known for making racially insensitive and discriminatory remarks that reduce our fellow Americans to little but their race or sex. Celebrating Korean American Day is one of the many ways through which we take a stand.
This year, KAC would like to recognize US Senator Kamala D. Harris and CA Congressman Jimmy Gomez for introducing Senate Resolution 373 and House Resolution 686 in recognition of Korean American Day, as well as Councilmember David Ryu and Council President Herb Wesson for recognizing Korean American Day at LA City Hall. KAC was honored to represent the Korean American community during this celebration at City Hall, alongside Councilmember David Ryu, Congressmember Jimmy Gomez, the new Consul General of Korea Wan-joong Kim, and Ralph Ahn, son of the late and historic freedom fighter Dosan Ahn Chang Ho.
On January 6, KAC Executive Director Joon Bang joined CA Congresswoman Karen Bass and Oscar winners TJ McKay Martin, Dan Lindsay, Charles Stewart, and Eric Rico Reed in a panel discussion of the documentary film on the LA Riots called LA 92.
On December 20, KAC held our Year End Party at Mama Lion. We were thrilled to have more than 50 community members join us in ending 2017 and welcoming the New Year, along with CA Assemblymember Miguel Santiago, LA City Councilmember David Ryu, Deputy Consul General Insang Hwang from the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea, and Consul Taehoon Ku from the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea.
