KAC would like to thank Phyllis Kim, Executive Director of the Korean American Forum of CA, for speaking with our MUN students. Phyllis shared the history of "comfort women" and recent developments regarding the issue. Our students took this chance to discuss its implications and think more critically about the issue of "comfort women."
The National College Leadership Conference (NCLC) provides students with an immersive setting in which to network with peers and established Korean American professionals, as well as to learn about different career paths, Korean American history, and Asian American issues. On May 24, KAC's staff went on Radio Korea to share information about NCLC and the benefits of attending for students, and a wave of support from the community immediately followed. Several generous community members and KAC Board members made pledges to sponsor the full cost of attendance at the 2017 NCLC for 10 students.
Throughout the month of May, KAC held voter registration drives all around Koreatown in an effort to engage more Korean Americans. By setting up booths at Young Nak church, MAGA church, Koreatown Galleria, and Identity LA, KAC was able to register more than 80 Korean Americans, who are now able to advocate for what they believe in through voting. KAC would like to thank our Model United Nations students, 3.1 Women's Association, 3.1 U.S.A., Koreatown Senior & Community Center, Korean American Registered Voters Association, Korean American Federation North Los Angeles (KAFNLA), and all of our volunteers for their invaluable work and time.
On May 1, 2017, Korean American Coalition (KAC), 3.1 Women’s Association, 3.1 U.S.A., KOWIN-LA, Koreatown Senior & Community Center, Korean American Registered Voters Association, and Korean American Federation North Los Angeles (KAFNLA) held a press conference to encourage the Korean community to participate in the L.A City election and the Congressional District 34 election. Media: Radio Korea, Koreatown Daily, LA18 News, Korea Times, Radio Seoul, Radio 1230, SBS News, Korea Daily On May 23rd, KAC's Model United Nations students had the opportunity to meet with Consul Shigeru Kikuma at the Consulate-General of Japan. Consul Kikuma answered our students' questions, from international to domestic policies in Japan, and provided them with a unique perspective of the country. Our students were able to learn about the different issues that Japan faces and the approaches that the Japanese government takes to address these issues. KAC would like to thank Consul Kikuma, Advisor Jennifer Usyak, and the Consulate-General of Japan for making this experience possible.

On May 13th, KAC Executive Director Joon Bang spoke at the Korean American Grassroots Conference in Los Angeles. He spoke to an audience of young students, sharing information about the voting process, the history of voting rights, the value of voting, and the impact that voting can have in our community.

The aforementioned organizations will help Korean Americans register to vote at convenient locations in the Koreatown area. On May 6 (Sat.), 7 (Sun.), 13 (Sat.), and 14 (Sun.) from 2:30p.m. to 5:30p.m., there will be on-site voter registration available at Koreatown Plaza (928 S Western Ave), Galleria Market (3250 W Olympic Blvd), Koreatown Senior & Community Center (965 Normandie Ave), Hannam Chain (2740 W Olympic Blvd), and Madang Mall (621 S Western Ave). |
