2019 SCIP Project
The Korean American Coalition's (KAC) Summer College Internship Program (SCIP) is designed to provide personal and professional development opportunities to highly qualified Korean American college students, and to encourage them to take on future leadership roles in the Korean American community.
This past year, the 2019 SCIP interns put together a website titled "Familiar Dreams," 정든 꿈 (jeongdeun kkum) to create a platform for residents of Koreatown and highlight the diversity of the Korean American experience. A common thread among all the interviewees was their passion and optimistic tenacity in the face of racial, socioeconomic, political, or professional obstacles. Their hope in this project was to show that there is no one "correct" way to be Korean American, or achieve success.

KAC Encourages the Community to Participate in 2020 Census
Held once every ten years, the US Census provides information to be used by multiple government agencies in distributing resources and federal dollars throughout the United States. New census information impacts the balance of power in each state, as it determines the allocation of congressional seats and distribution of federal funds to local communities over the next decade. Therefore, the Korean American Coalition strongly encourages everyone to participate in the 2020 Census to accurately reflect the makeup of our community.
Every household will be able to respond online, by mail, or by phone, and will receive an invitation to participate in the 2020 Census by either a census worker or by mail. An initial invitation to respond to the 2020 Census should arrive in the mail between March 12-21, and a reminder letter should arrive between March 16-24. For those who do not respond to the first two invitations, a reminder postcard will be sent between March 26-April 3, followed by a reminder letter and paper questionnaire between April 8-16, and a final reminder postcard between April 20-27. Upon no response, a census worker will follow up in person.
KAC Executive Director Eunice Song stressed the importance of the Census to the Korean and Korean American communities. “Participating in the census will help our community get the funding, resources and representation we need. Our community needs to be counted accurately in order to strengthen our collective voice, which is why participating in the 2020 Census is crucial.”

Korean American Coalition Alternative Dispute Resolution Center Continues to Serve the Community Every member of the community experiences disputes, including Korean Americans. One way to resolve escalating disputes is go to court. But lawsuits are long and expensive. KAC founded "The 4.29 KAC Alternative Dispute Resolution (KAC ADR) Center" in response to the ethnic upheaval that devastated parts of Los Angeles during the 1992 Los Angeles Riots. Special focus is placed on working with the diverse Community of Angeles County, which keeps cases out of California's already overloaded court system. Mediation proceedings are confidential; KAC also provides bilingual Korean/English services, as many residents - particularly low income individuals - have trouble speaking English. Progress since summer 2017 has been significant. In the prior Los Angeles County fiscal year, the KAC ADR Center closed 54 cases out of 68 cases initiated. This means the Center has assisted 108 individual and businesses resolve their disputes with a success rate of 79.4%. In the first quarter of the current fiscal year the Center has already closed 20 cases. The Center is also expanding its efforts. In the summer of 2018, for the first time, KAC and the Asian Pacific American Dispute Resolution Center (APADRC) held a joint 40 hour mediation training. The training equips individuals with the skill set to be a certified mediator, thus further serving the Los Angeles and Korean American community. The 4.29 KAC ADR Center represents our ongoing commitment to improve the Los Angeles and Korean American communities. We will continue to find new and innovative ways to serve the community. |
