Korean American Coalition Congratulates New Congressional District 34 Representative Jimmy Gomez
Los Angeles, CA – On June 6, 2017, residents of Congressional District 34, which includes Eagle Rock, Boyle Heights, downtown LA, Chinatown, Highland Park, Lincoln Heights, and Koreatown, elected former Assemblymember Jimmy Gomez as their representative, replacing Xavier Beccera. With a vote of 19,761 to 13,108, Jimmy Gomez prevailed over candidate Robert Lee Ahn. Jimmy Gomez is known for his passion for and commitment to the community, and KAC congratulates him on his election. We look forward to working with him to address the needs and interests of the Korean American community.
Korean American residents came out in impressive numbers to vote in the Congressional District 34 special election. Vote-by-mail results suggested that voter turnout for Korean Americans may have increased from the already-high turnout from the April 4th primary. As of June 5th, 5,665 Korean Americans, or 34% of Korean American registered voters, had voted by mail, compared to about 4,000 Korean American registered voters who had voted by mail before the April 4 election.
KAC takes pride in the high level of mobilization and political participation by the Korean American community during this election and anticipates working with our community to further strengthen our voice in subsequent elections.
