L.A. Riots Commemoration Event to be Held Thursday April 29
Come join us to commemorate the L.A. Riots on April 29, 2010 from 6:30 to 8 pm on Serrano Ave. between Wilshire Blvd. and Seventh St. Cooking and sharing a meal with others across neighborhood lines is a way to embrace the aspects of life that unite us: family, food, and creativity. To commemorate the 18th anniversary of the 4.29 Riots, and celebrate how much we’ve built out of the destruction in our past, the Korean American Coalition invites families of the Wilshire/South LA neighborhoods to come together for an evening about eating healthy, eating right, and eating together.
Participants can learn gardening tips, get information about food security in Los Angeles, plant free seeds in pots to take home and grow, play with an interactive presentation about watersheds and receive some quick and easy recipes for healthy eating at home. Local musical performers will come out to entertain the crowd over the course of the night. Representatives of Mayor Villaraigosa and the LAPD's Olympic Division will also speak about the Riots, and assess the progress of our communities since then. Organizers of community gardens in South LA, that provide fresh produce where there are no other options for fresh food, will be there to share opportunities to help make sustainable eating in Los Angeles more equitable.
LA's own Kogi will be selling food, as will ice cream sandwich dispensers extraordinaire CoolHaus and organic foodists Green Truck on the Go.
Our partners include Tree People, Cultivating Sustainable Communities, Network for a Healthy California, Growfriend and Coast Produce, among many others.
