KAC MUN Attends the Mission Viejo MUN Conference
The KAC Model United Nations (KAC MUN) program participated in the 2010 Mission Viejo High School Model United Nations Conference this past weekend, from January 16-17. Twenty club members debated protocols for nuclear weapons in space, eco-terrorism, regulations for genetically modified foods, and the morality of child marriage with more than 700 other high school students from across the Southland. KAC MUN members represented the countries of Spain, Botswana, the DPRK, and Portugal.
The KAC Model United Nations program (MUN) is an after-school program designed to help underserved high school students in the greater Koreatown area. MUN is intended to give inner-city youth insight into the world at large – geopolitics, international relations, and national and international politics – while honing everyday skills, all in an effort to engage students in a critical reflection of not only global but local issues.
The Korean American Coalition has a long history of leadership training: the National College Leadership Conference is now in its twenty-fifth year, while the KAC Summer College Internship Program is in its twenty-third year. The MUN program, not offered at any area high schools, is thereby designed as an ambitious leadership training program for Koreatown high school students.
