KAC is proud to host a dinner event on behalf of Susan Ahn Cuddy to celebrate her 95th birthday on January 16, 2010. The celebration dinner will take place at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel. Reception will be at 5 PM and the dinner will start at 6 PM. Susan is one of the most inspirational role models of our time, and we invite you to join us for a celebration of this memorable occasion for a true hero and friend of our community.
It is a word easily overused in a country shaped by singular figures, but there is no more apt a word than trailblazer to describe Susan Ahn Cuddy. The eldest daughter of a Korean revolutionary hero, Ahn Cuddy made her mark in American history, breaking racial and gender barriers long before Americans knew of hyphenated heritages; the first Korean American woman in the U.S. military and the first woman ever to serve as a gunnery officer in the US Navy.
Susan Ahn is one of five children born to Helen Ahn and Dosan Ahn Chang-Ho, the Korean independence movement leader who immigrated to the U.S. in 1902. The Ahn family helped sow the seeds of one of the country’s first Korean American communities. Their old Los Angeles home is now a historical landmark and serves as the Korean Studies Institute at the University of Southern California.
A young Susan Ahn aided her father’s efforts to free Korea from Japanese imperial rule and went on to a distinguished career in the U.S. Navy , the Library of Congress and The National Security Agency in Washington D.C. She married the late Francis X. Cuddy, a fellow Navy Intelligence code-breaker, in 1947. Their son Philip Ahn Cuddy is the family historian. The State Assembly of California District 28 has named Susan Ahn Cuddy Woman of the Year in honor of her public service and she has received the American Courage Award from the Asian American Justice Center in Washington D.C.Please come celebrate the life of this true American pioneer and join the Korean American Coalition in wishing her happy 95th birthday.
