Dr. Jim Yong Kim Elected Dartmouth’s 17th President
KAC would like to congratulate Dr. Jim Yong Kim on his election as Dartmouth's 17th President. Dr. Kim will take office on July 1, 2009. He is the first Asian American to head an Ivy League institution.
Dr. Kim was a recipient of KAC's 2008 Distinguished Leadership Award, as well as a counselor and volunteer at KAC's annual National College Leadership Conference.
Dr. Kim had previously held appointments as the Francois Xavier Bagnoud Professor of Health and Human Rights at the Harvard School of Public Health, and as Professor of Medicine and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Kim has had prior experience at the World Health Organization (WHO) as the director of the HIV/AIDS department. While director, he focused on initiatives to help developing countries increase their treatment, prevention, and care program capabilities, as well as spearheading the "3x5" Initiative to put three million people in developing countries on AIDS treatment by the end of 2005.
Dr. Kim is trained both as a physician and a medical anthropologist, receiving his M.D. and Ph.D. from Harvard University. His long list of honors and accolades include a 2003 MacArthur "Genius" Fellowship, acknowledgment as one of America's 25 Best Leaders by US News & World Report in 2005, and selection as one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World by Time Magazine in 2006.
